The Ilex series are pieces all from the same tree , a 600 year old Quercus Ilex taken from a housing estate in Hersham. A very dense wood, almost all heart wood. Some pieces have evidence of an infection which was the reason for the tree's removal. Other pieces have swirling mottled patches of colour in the grain where the wood has started to decay. These remind me of weathered pieces of Flint that can be found on many beaches. The forms of these pieces have been guided in large part by the removal of rotting areas, stabilising the remainder and trying to highlight patterns in the grain.
